Sunset Ranch is currently in the planning stages of building a native Hawaiian Nursery in partnership with Hi’ipaka, the owner and operator of Waimea Valley (www.waimeavalley.net).  We have three primary objectives for the Nursery at Sunset Ranch: (i) Satellite Location: A satellite location at a higher elevation protects the collection from current threats in the valley, and provides for a more productive environment for certain native Hawaiian species; (ii) Education: Sunset Ranch views the Nursery as an effective tool to educate the community on native versus non-native species, and the importance of land conservation in Hawaii.  The design of the Nursery will be interactive in nature:  visitors will be able to touch and feel the plants, interact with experts, and watch a short film documentary on the history of the North Shore of Oahu; (iii) Staging Area: The Nusery will provide a staging area to lead organized hikes into the mauka regions of the valley to help maintain invasive species and reintroduce natives. Our vision is for visitors to educate themselves at the Nursery and then put their newly acquired knowledge to practical use by hiking into the valley. We also hope to work with schools and organizations in an effort to organize these efforts into meaningful and effective programs for the community.
