We’re excited to share that we recently completed the build out of a small aquaponics station in Fern’s Garden. While we’re still working out the details of the greater vision that is our Environmental Learning Center (ELC); we believe this little station provides a great start to fulfilling one element of our mission: helping advance sustainability in Hawaii through educating visitors and the local community on highly productive farming methods.
The system you see in these pictures includes a 3′ X 5′ planting bed and a 500 gallon fish tank. Together they provide up to 200 pounds of fish and 400 to 600 heads of lettuce, leafy crops or other vegetables per year. We think most anyone would agree that such a level of production is quite impressive when you consider the size of the system.
What about the cost? The materials for this particular system cost approximately $700. This includes the cost of the pump and all of the plumbing. The system is also very easy to set-up. A beginner can have this system up and running within a couple of hours. If one elects to have the system delivered and installed, the cost is $950. Not bad. This includes complete install, fish and starter crops. While there are also monthly expenses to consider, thankfully they are nominal. The monthly cost to operate this system ranges between $35 and $50 per month. So the annual savings these systems provide is no doubt significant. Perhaps more importantly, these systems teach people how to farm AND they make it FUN!
